Research Interests

  • Bio-inspired Self-organizing Robotic Systems and Real-Time Embedded Systems

    • Self-organizing mobile robots, self-organizing sensor networks, brain-body co-evolution of systems   

    • Evolutionary Developmental Robotics (new methodologies that systematically integrate evolutionary robotics, epigenetic robotics, and morphogenetic robotics to study the evolution, physical and mental development and learning of intelligent robotic systems).

    • Agent-based architecture for reconfigurable embedded systems

  • Robot Vision and Machine Learning

    • Brain-like cognitive development of complex adaptive systems, such as intelligent robots, embodied intelligent systems (including cognitive reasoning and learning, self-motivated systems, knowledge representation, etc.), game systems, etc.

    • Neurocognitive approaches to object/pattern/activity learning and recognition and learning

  • Computational Intelligence for Biomedical System and System Biology 

    •  Data analysis and prediction in biomedical system (e.g., multi-scale system modeling for tumor cell development, optimization model for peripheral nerve regeneration, etc.) engineering

    •  Computational modeling for system biological (e.g., biological morphogenesis)

  • Received a grant ($126.144) on "A hierarchical gene regulatory network model for generating robust emerging behaviors for interacting collective systems" from Honda Research Institute Europe .  Funding period: 3/16/2009-3/15/2011. (as sole PI)
