Thrust 4 extends the top-down view of the network established in Thrusts 1, 2, and 3 to the individual nodes attached to the network. Embedded intelligence has the potential to establish more efficient communication of information to remote sites, if the node has a more than local understanding of the needs of those connecting to it. In addition, node hardware may need to connect to different types of network (e.g., as in wireless nodes). Intelligence should allow easy "plug-and-play" nodes identifying the network and identifying itself to the network.
